In March 2016, CPB Contractors was announced the preferred contractor to design and build the 7.3 kilometre extension ready for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. 

GRC provided tender phase measurement services to CPB’s successful bid and cost management services throughout design development.

Open to the public in December 2017, the light rail extension connects the existing light rail system at the Gold Coast University Hospital station to heavy rail at Helensvale station and has the capacity to carry 3,000 passengers per hour.
