High Capacity Metro Trains

In late 2016, the Victorian Government entered into a Public Private Partnership contract with Evolution Rail to deliver the High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT) project. Evolution Rail comprises Downer Rail, CRRC Changchun and Plenary.

The project will introduce the largest single order of new trains in Victorian history – 65 seven-car trains and two dedicated maintenance facilities.

The high capacity metro trains will progressively enter service from mid-2019, operating first on the Cranbourne-Pakenham lines, and will eventually run through the new Metro Tunnel to Sunbury. Downer’s scope of work includes:

  • Project management services for the HCMT construction
  • Design, construction and commissioning of the train maintenance facility, stabling yards and light service facility, and
  • Maintenance and overhaul of the HCMT fleet, train maintenance facility, light service facility and simulators for 30 years

GRC is proud to work with Downer EDI on this transformative project.
